Surprising Betting Favorites Emerge For Former All-Pro’s Next Team

February 24, 2024 by Last Word On Pro Football

Stefon Diggs Next Team

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs is back in the headlines again, as some around the league believe the former All-Pro could look for his next team in the coming months. At his best, Diggs was one of the greatest receivers in the game and helped turn Josh Allen into one of the most dangerous quarterbacks in football.

However, the wide receiver has not been the happiest camper in recent years, publicly expressing frustration after each of the past two postseason losses. What might truly send Stefon Diggs to his next team, though, is his lack of involvement in the offense. The wideout became something of an afterthought once Joe Brady took over as offensive coordinator, and now with Brady landing the full-time job, it’s fair to wonder if Diggs has much of a future in Buffalo.

For what it’s worth, Vegas seems to think Diggs will return in 2024. According to posted odds, the Bills are the easy favorites to retain his services with -300 odds. If Stefon Diggs does leave, the Chiefs, Texans, Patriots, Cowboys, Ravens, and Panthers all have relatively decent odds of being his next team.

Stefon Diggs Next Team: Betting Odds Show Surprising Favorites

Despite the blatant frustrations with the team, there is a clear reason that Stefon Diggs is not expected to join a new team next year. As of this posting, Diggs carries a $27.85 million cap. If traded before June 1st, that number drops to $18.14 million, per OverTheCap. While that would clear up some much-needed cap space, it‘s also a lot of money to devote to a player that isn’t on your team.

If Stefon Diggs is going to leave for his next team, it probably won’t be until after June 1st. If traded after June 1st, the Bills will only take  $5.6 million dead hit and free up $22.25 million in cap savings. Still, by that point they would have already become cap-compliant and built most of their roster, so what would they need the cap space for?

As stated above, Diggs is probably going to be a Bill next year. However, if Stefon Diggs leaves, Vegas believes the following seven organizations are most likely to be his next team.

The Betting Odds

Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs: +1000 Odds

It’s no secret that the Kansas City Chiefs need a wide receiver. Even though they won the Super Bowl, the offense didn’t look like its usual self, and the team shouldn’t rely on having a historically dominant defense in consecutive seasons, especially since two of their best players are set to hit free agency. Stefon Diggs might be near the end of the line, but he should have another good season or two in his tank, and the Chiefs could be able to get the most out of him if they do become his next team. The biggest question is whether Buffalo would ever trade Diggs to their biggest conference rival.

The Houston Texans, meanwhile, have the cap space to become the next team for Stefon Diggs. With Tank Dell returning from a torn ACL, the Texans could use another receiver to support star quarterback C.J. Stroud. This team made it to the AFC Divisional Round last year, and now they have a chance to become true contenders if they make the correct offseason moves.

Patriots, Cowboys, Bears, Ravens: +1200 Odds

The New England Patriots need help at every position, but would they be interested in an over-30 receiver when they’re a few years away from contending? If they did, would the Bills trade Diggs to a division rival?

The Dallas Cowboys are a much more likely to be Stefon Diggs next team, as they are out of the conference. Brandin Cooks didn’t work out, and it’s time to give up on Michael Gallup. If Diggs can accept being second in targets to CeeDee Lamb, this duo has a chance to be one of the best in the league.

The D.J. Moore trade worked to perfection for the Chicago Bears, but they could still use another wide receiver. With Caleb Williams coming in, the Bears could finally solve their quarterback woes and get the first 4,000-yard passer in franchise history.

The Ravens, meanwhile, have a promising youngster in Zay Flowers, a proven stud in Mark Andrews, and not much else. With Odell Beckham set to hit free agency, the team could pivot and bring in Diggs. Once again though, the Bills have to sign off on any trade, so would they ever let Stefon Diggs go to one of the elite teams in the AFC?

Panthers: +1600 Odds

The Carolina Panthers need wide receivers in the worst way, but despite the overwhelming lack of talent at the position, they probably won’t be the next team for Stefon Diggs. Carolina is a long way away from competing, and Diggs will probably be washed up by the time this team is ready to compete. Even looking beyond the age issue, the Panthers don’t have that many draft picks, so they cherish the ones they currently have. This team should throw money at free agents instead of trading for Diggs.
