Fantasy football drafts have already concluded, but there might still be some last-minute drafters. It’s important to understand that the players you drafted serve as the core of your team throughout the season. However, to succeed and last through the NFL season, working the waiver wires and free agent pools is crucial. If you’re looking to bolster your roster before Week 1, here are some players like Puka Nacua who might still be available on your waiver wire and are worth considering.
Puka Nacua, Tyjae Spears Highlight Must-Add Waiver Pickups Before Week 1
Cole Turner
Cole Turner, the Commanders’ tight end, is currently available in 10, 12, and possibly even 14-team leagues. Standing tall at 6’6″ and weighing 240lbs, he has tremendous potential. In a preseason game against the Ravens, he showcased his ability to connect with quarterback Sam Howell, catching two passes for 24 yards. Given Logan Thomas ‘ injury history, Turner may get a chance to play sooner rather than later. The new Offensive Coordinator, Eric Bieniemy, prefers RPOs (Run Pass Options) with quick passes, which is favorable for tight ends. It’s worth checking if Turner is available in waivers. Don’t wait too long; check now!
Tyjae Spears
The month of August featured a rookie running back who showed impressive performance during the preseason games. And no, I’m not referring to Jaymar Gibbs or Bijan Robinson; it’s Tyjae Spears from the Titans. While Derrick Henry is currently the top running back for the Titans, he is approaching his eighth year in the NFL at 29 and has already had a lot of usage. There is a possibility that the Titans coaching staff might consider reducing his touches during the 2023 season to preserve him for the demanding NFL season. If they do so, Spears could take advantage of the situation and immediately get 6-10 touches. Spears could be a league winner. So, acquiring him now is better before your league mates catch on.
Deon Jackson
Deon Jackson, the running back for the Indianapolis Colts, is currently only owned in 31% of Yahoo Fantasy Leagues. He’s currently the starting running back for the first four games of the season, while Jonathan Taylor is on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list due to an injury. Recent reports suggest that Taylor wanted to leave Indianapolis but could not find a team to trade him. If Taylor is traded or benched due to losses, Jackson could become the starting running back for the entire season. While he obviously won’t put up Jonathan Taylor numbers, that much volume easily justifies a roster spot.
Puka Nacua
Puka Nacua deserves the award for the best name. If he is available on your waivers, could you drop everything and grab him immediately? Cooper Kupp is currently dealing with a muscle injury that may take some time to heal. Nacua has been compared to his teammate Kupp, and if you watch his tape, you can see the striking similarities. Nacua is already impressive with his route-running, catching ability, and attention to detail. Qualities that have caught the attention of the Rams organization should also catch your attention.
