The San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback situation is still murky as they head into the 2022 league year. But on Friday, the team seemed to locked down its guy at the backup position.
According to reports from ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Niners have signed veteran backup Nate Sudfeld on a fully-guaranteed, one-year $2 million deal.
There were reportedly two other teams interested in signing Sudfeld, “all believing he has starter potential in the league.”
49ers gave QB Nate Sudfeld a one-year, fully-guaranteed $2 million deal with upside to get it to $3 million, per source. There were two other teams interested in Sudfeld with, in the words of one source, “all believing he has starter potential in the league.”

This move seems to indicated the expected result for Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason. Despite leading the team to an NFC Championship game this year, the Niners are widely expected to move on from Jimmy G and make way for former No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance in 2022. Sudfeld will likely be the lone backup behind the rising second-year pro.
Sudfeld was drafted by Washington with a sixth round-pick in 2016. He saw his only on-field action during his four seasons as a backup for the Philadelphia Eagles from 2017-20. He was elevated from the Niners’ practice squad after Lance suffered a minor knee injury this past season, but failed to record a single snap in 2021.
