A Second Chance Meeting: Maryland vs South Carolina Preview

November 12, 2023 by Maryland Sports Blog

Maryland kicked things off with a Victory over Harvard 98-75 Monday night. The Lady Terps started the game on a high note with many positives.

A Sunday Meeting as the No. 14 Terps pay the No. 6 South Carolina a visit.

South Carolina led by Dawn Staley is looking to get back to the national championship. Maryland and South Carolina faced each other in the Elite Eight last season.

This South Carolina team has a different makeup compared to the last three seasons.

The Keys to Victory

South Carolina will get better as the season progresses

Talent is important in basketball, however, Chemistry is what makes a team successful. South Carolina is coming into a season that does not have “The Freshies” on their roster. South Carolina respectfully lost their two top scorers Zia Cooke and Aliyah Boston.

Something to keep in mind when watching the game, South Carolina has a height advantage that Maryland lacked last season, and this season in a way.

The defense will determine the game

Maryland this season from a roster standpoint has more pieces to work with compared to last season. Allie Kubek and Emma Chardon coming off the bench will be key in this game. While Allie is still working her way back from last season-ending injury, in her first game Allie played 22 minutes, 8 points, and 4 rebounds.

Emma Chardon who also missed last season due to injury had an impact on the victory against Harvard. Emma had 10 points in 14 minutes.

Maryland last season lacked size, Most teams will not win basketball games if they average less than 2 fewer rebounds against opponents. With the addition of Jakia Brown-Turner, as well as bringing in some recruits such as Emily Fisher, Riley Nelson, and Hawa Doumbouya.

Even on the offensive side of the ball with Brown-Turner on the floor that should be more flexible, especially with a lineup that has Masonius, and Alexander.

South Carolina’s size will not make it easy. Kamilla Cardoso will be a force to reckon with as the season progresses. However, now that Aliyah Boston is not in the lineup that puts more focus on Kamilla. How will Maryland defend Kamila? I expect one of Coach Frese’s defensive specials. But expect different bodies to defend Cardoso.

Revenge? Yes but, put them on Notice!

For those returning from last season! It should have them motivated from Sunday’s game. South Carolina has had Maryland’s number for some time, especially the last four matchups.

Maryland must come out hot early in this game. Especially the bench. Everyone played a significant role in the victory against Harvard. 34 points off the bench is something to build off.

This should have the makings of a great game.
