Deebo Samuel and the San Francisco 49ers have yet to agree on a contract extension. ESPN’s Adam Schefter believes the wide receiver is the one holding up a new agreement.
On Tuesday’s episode of NFL Live, Schefter said the 49ers are ready to give the 26-year-old a new contract. However, he pointed to Samuel scrubbing mentions of the team on social media as a clue that he’s not ready to sign.
“San Francisco would pay Samuel today, tomorrow, the next day,” Schefter said. “It’s not hard to figure out what the contract would look like. We’ve seen some of the top numbers in the league.
“This I think, right now, is Deebo Samuel not wanting to get a deal done. It’s not San Francisco not willing to do a deal. The 49ers are ready. Deebo Samuel is the one that has put a halt to everything for right now.”

While few insiders are more glued into the NFL than Schefter, it’s hard to tell if this is coming from knowledgeable sources or his own interpretation. Contacts within the 49ers organization could also be pushing this spin on Schefter to help win a PR battle.
It’s also possible Samuel is simply waiting for other star wideouts to sign extensions first in hopes of resetting the market. Schefter reported Monday that, along with Samuel, A.J. Brown and Terry McLaurin are also not reporting to voluntary workouts while seeking new deals.
Without a new deal, Samuel is set to make around $4 million in the final year of his rookie contract. He handily outplayed that salary last season, registering 1,770 yards from scrimmage and 14 touchdowns as a playmaking receiver and runner.
San Francisco should do whatever it takes to keep Samuel around, but it remains to be soon whether Samuel wants to stay.
