The Chicago Bears could still be in the market for a running back, as they could trade for James Cook in a recent rumor that is floating. According to a report, the Bears could make a run for this running back as the team is still trying to solidify their offense after making several moves this offseason. It’s easy to see why the Bears would want to acquire Cook in a possible trade, since they have their future starting quarterback Caleb Williams and a potential WR1 in Luther Burden, it could all come together at once before the 2025 regular season. Current Bears running back D’Andre Swift has been in several trade rumors, where he is coming off his worst year last season, and may lose his job to Roschon Johnson.
There’s no guarantee for the Bears sticking with Johnson for the long term despite his production, since they could target someone like Cook. It might look like Cook might return to Buffalo since he did return to mandatory minicamp, but there’s a chance he could sit out for Training Camp until he gets a long-term extension. Buffalo and Cook are still far apart in the negotiations, so it doesn’t look good for the two parties that are looking to agree. Since many Bears fans were disappointed they didn’t select 2025 draft pick Ashton Jeanty in the first round, they could make up for it and try to trade for Cook while he is in a bad situation in Buffalo due to his contract situation.
The Bears won’t be the only team making a run for Cook, but these three other teams may pursue him.

Potential Destinations
Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys have one of the worst running back units in the league despite signing Miles Sanders and Javonte Williams. They must do something to address this department, but they’re rolling the dice on Sanders and Williams to see who is more capable of staying in Dallas for the long term, as both of them are on one-year contracts. 2025 draft pick Jaydon Blue is the only running back on this offense who has a real chance to be a reliable starter. However, he is a rookie, and the Cowboys would be in a better position to get someone who is explosive and already proven.
Cook has not only the explosiveness to help lead Dallas on the ground, but he and wide receiver George Pickens could be truly the new kids on the block for this offense.
Los Angeles Chargers
Meanwhile, head coach Jim Harbaugh wants to win football games with a powerful run game. The Los Angeles Chargers are still testing the waters on who will step up as their RB1. Between first-round pick Omarion Hampton and free agent signee Najee Harris, there’s a better chance that Hampton will win the job. Since the team has the cap space to improve their offense for quarterback Justin Herbert, they should get Cook while Hampton continues to develop as a backup, sharing the snaps with this Pro Bowler.
Washington Commanders
The Washington Commanders have a ferocious offense developing, led by quarterback Jayden Daniels. However, the run game still has some question marks this upcoming season, as Brian Robinson Jr. and Austin Ekeler didn’t make too much of an impact as Daniels was slinging it for the majority of the snaps. If they trade for Cook, it should solidify their offense into a well-rounded team.
