The Washington Commanders opened the preseason with a 23-21 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Saturday. The Panthers led for much of the game, but rookie quarterback Sam Howell led a furious fourth-quarter comeback to give the Commanders a 21-20 lead.
Washington had multiple opportunities to win the game on Carolina’s final drive, but defensive penalties kept the Panthers alive. Carolina would eventually kick the game-winning field goal with 24 seconds remaining.
There was a lot of excitement surrounding the Commanders’ first preseason game. There was the new name, uniforms and helmets for Washington. The game also featured the debuts of quarterbacks Carson Wentz and Sam Howell.
