With the New England Patriots taking their sweet time in finding staff replacements for Josh McDaniels and the coaches who followed him to the Raiders, Bill Belichick might have a much bigger role in the offense next season.
Rumors have circulated over the weekend that Belichick might be calling offensive plays for the Patriots next year. McDaniels has been the primary offensive play-caller in recent years.
When McDaniels left, he took three of Belichick’s top positional assistants with him. Several of those jobs remain vacant two months later.
NFL fans – and Patriots fans in particular – see no issue with Belichick doing the playcalling though. Some are looking forward to seeing if Belichick allows Pro Bowl quarterback Mac Jones to throw even more than McDaniels did:

If Mac Jones starts airing it out, then we’ll know McDaniels kept the training wheels on all season. https://t.co/25i8MlBm0Z

The New England Patriots’ offense found new life in 2021 after ranking 27th the year before. With rookie Mac Jones at the helm, the Patriots offense finished in the middle of the pack, going 10-7 and making the playoffs.
But the Patriots were promptly bounced from the playoffs by the rival Buffalo Bills. Many began to question whether Jones was actually the right fit for the team despite making the Pro Bowl as an alternate.
As for Bill Belichick, while he specializes in defense he has his hand in almost every aspect of the team. It wouldn’t be the biggest shock in the world if he can make the Patriots offense hum in 2022.
Will Bill Belichick be a good offensive playcaller?
