The Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers had some contentious moments in their series to start the 2022 MLB season. But when the series reached a boiling point, one Cubs pitcher took an action that earned him a suspension.
On Saturday, Cubs pitcher Keegan Thompson intentionally hit Brewers slugger Andrew McCutchen. This was allegedly retaliation for the Brewers pitchers hitting several Cubs batters.
Thompson’s first pitch only narrowly missed McCutchen before he beaned the five-time All-Star on his second pitch. That got him an immediate ejection and almost caused a scuffle to break out between the two teams.
According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the league has levied its punishment. Thompson has been handed a three-game suspension for intentionally throwing at McCutchen.
The Cubs went on to win the game 9-0.

Thompson isn’t the only one getting punished for the incident though. Cubs manager David Ross has been suspended for a game as well.
Ross will serve his suspension this Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Keegan Thompson made his MLB debut for the Cubs last season after spending several years in the minor leagues. Mainly used as a relief pitcher, he appeared in 32 games and went 3-3 as a starter with a 3.38 earned run average.
He threw 40 pitches and didn’t allow a hit through 2.2 innings before going after Andrew McCutchen and taking the rest of the night off.
