Sonny Gray’s time as a Cincinnati Red has come to an end. On Sunday, the team announced the trade of the two-time All-Star, who will be acquired by the Minnesota Twins.
Per the Reds, “The Reds today have acquired Minnesota Twins 2021 top draft pick RHP Chase Petty in exchange for RHP Sonny Gray and minor league RHP Francis Peguero.”

Gray spent the last three seasons as a member of the Reds. Making an All-Star appearance during his first year with the ballclub back in 2019. In that season, Gray finished 11-8 with a 2.87 ERA and a career-high 205 strikeouts across 175.1 innings of work.
However, the veteran starter just couldn’t match that success over the following two years. With his ERA rising to 3.70 in 2020 and 4.19 in 2021.
Luckily for the Reds, the franchise has a number of up-and-coming pitchers in its farm system (which Petty should only add to) that make it a bit easier to move off some of their more expensive rotational pieces.

Gray signed a three-year, $30.5 million deal when he came to Cincinnati, which held a team option for the 2023 season. Given the fact that the Reds traded him, it’s likely that Cincy knew they were going to go in another direction; and wanted to get something for him.
When he’s on, Gray can be terrific. The Twins are hoping they’ll be able to squeeze a few more of those good seasons out of him as he ventures deeper into his 30’s.
