The Cleveland Browns have more than enough cap space to tie down their essential players this offseason. But one Brown player is going to be playing out this year on the franchise tag.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Browns have placed the franchise tag on star tight end David Njoku. By tagging Njoku, the Browns are on the hook for $10.834 million in fully guaranteed money this year.
In five seasons with the Cleveland Browns, Njoku has been solid if unremarkable as a receiver. He has 148 receptions for 1,754 yards and 15 touchdowns in 65 games for the Browns.
Njoku has just one game of over 80 yards in his career – a seven-catch, 149-yard performance against the Chargers this past year. He had his best season in 2018 with 56 receptions for 639 yards and four touchdowns.

After making the playoffs in 2020, the Cleveland Browns fell back down to earth in 2021. They went 8-9, losing three of their final four games as quarterback Baker Mayfield battled injuries.
The Browns have gone 19-14 over the past two seasons but it remains to be seen if they have the right quarterback for the job. Mayfield struggled mightily in 2021 and there is speculation that the Browns may move on from him.
But the Browns appear more than willing to keep one of Mayfield’s prefered weapons by any means necessary.
Will David Njoku enjoy a career-year in 2022?
