Just over a week ago, the New England Patriots made the surprising decision to released veteran quarterback Cam Newton.
Since then, he teased an upcoming conversation in which he would explain his release from the organization. On Friday morning, he published one-on-one conversation with his father, Cecil, to discuss his final days with the team.
During the conversation, Newton explained the one reason he was released by the Patriots. He knows he would have been a distraction for rookie quarterback Mac Jones – and the team in general.
“Can we be honest? The reason why they released me is because indirectly I was going to be a distraction, without being the starter,” Newton said. “Just my aura. That’s my gift and my curse.”

Earlier in the video, Newton explained how he learned he was going to be released. The former NFL MVP said he was surprised by the decision from Bill Belichick and company.
“When it happened, I went through the meeting – Matt Patricia and Bill [Belichick were there] – and we greeted each other and started talking,” Newton said. “At that time, they told me they were going to give the reigns to Mac, and I was like ‘OK, cool.’ It didn’t dawn on me that y’all are releasing me. I was confused – it was uncomfortable for everyone.”
Newton also made it clear he doesn’t plan to retire any time soon.
