The Washington Commanders will have a new quarterback in 2022. Will it be a veteran or a rookie? Will Washington land a star passer, such as Russell Wilson or Deshaun Watson?
You can bet head coach Ron Rivera will do everything to land Wilson, but the odds are still against the Seahawks trading Wilson, or Wilson even preferring a trade to Washington.
That could lead Washington to make an unpopular move, at least according to the fans.
CBS recently predicted 13 quarterback moves for this offseason, with Wilson and Aaron Rodgers staying with their respective teams. The quarterback moves included trades, free agents and draft picks.
CBS has the Commanders ending up with Carson Wentz.
Yikes.
Washington badly needs a QB, and Ron Rivera has publicly admitted they need to do more than take another mid-tier flyer. Wentz isn’t necessarily a Matthew Stafford-level get, but he at least offers more upside than the middling free-agent leftovers. The Commanders know Wentz well, having witnessed his Eagles peak in the NFC East, and both Rivera and offensive coordinator Scott Turner have a history of coaching a big-bodied play-maker with a penchant for forced throws in Cam Newton.
This would not be a popular move among fans — and for good reason. Why would fans buy season tickets to watch a quarterback who would be on his third team in three seasons? It would be easier to sell hope with a rookie passer to a dwindling fan base.
If the Colts release Wentz and Washington signs him, that is more palatable than a trade. However, it would also mean the Commanders struck out on multiple top targets.
Washington fans know this isn’t the same Carson Wentz from 2017. Therefore, the hope is he becomes someone else’s problem.
