Twelve days awaiting the 2023 NFL draft, and the latest CBS Sports 2023 NFL mock draft lands the Commanders a player meeting a need.
It’s a consensus that the Commanders would be best served if an offensive tackle or cornerback high on their draft board is still available at the No. 16 position.
Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports has released his newest mock draft, and a couple of things fell very well for the Commanders. Kerr made it clear he took whom he thinks is the best player available with each selection for this mock.
As a result, cornerbacks and offensive tackles were available for the Commanders at the No. 16 selection position, who are players whom I’ve noticed in mock drafts available anywhere from No. 10 to No. 20.
At No. 16, Kerr has the Commanders selecting Penn State cornerback Joey Porter, Jr, 6-foot-3, 195 pounds. Kerr’s capsule on the selection:
The Commanders could use some cornerback help in this draft, which makes it extremely beneficial Porter is still on the board. Not only is Porter a good fit in Jack Del Rio’s defense as a bump-and-run corner, but his long arms allow him to challenge big receivers. The coverage penalties need to decrease.
Of more curiosity to Commanders’ fans might be to observe who was available for the Commanders at the No. 16 selection in this mock draft. Offensive tackles Broderick Jones (Georgia) and Darnell Wright (Tennessee) are players they might be pleased to obtain.
Cornerbacks that were taken in this mock draft before No. 16 were Christian Gonzalez (Oregon) and Devon Witherspoon (Illinois). Offensive tackles snatched prior to the No. 16 selection were Paris Johnson, Jr (Ohio State) and Peter Skoronski (Northwestern).
