With Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski’s career coming to a close at the end of this season, former player and longtime assistant John Scheyer has been selected to take over in 2022. But, according to reports from New York Post writer Ian O’Connor, that wasn’t always the case.
In O’Connor’s recent book, Coach K: The Rise and Reign of Mike Krzyzewski, he says the Blue Devils program wanted to hire former Duke star/current Harvard head coach Tommy Amaker as the team’s new leader. But, Coach K reportedly wanted to hire Scheyer as his successor so he could retain further influence within the program after his retirement.
In the book, O’Connor describes a Zoom conversation between Krzyzewski and Amaker “very difficult,” leaving the Harvard coach “heartbroken.”
Coach K has since called this report a “cheap shot,” per Wright Thompson of ESPN.
“He 100 percent has that guilt,” his wife, Debbie Krzyzewski, told ESPN. “‘Did I do something that caused any harm that would bother Tommy? I love Tommy. He’s one of my boys. I don’t ever want anything to hurt my guys.’”
This Saturday, Coach K will take the sideline for his final regular-season home game as the Blue Devils take on the North Carolina Tar Heels at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
