Portland State head coach Bruce Barnum is serious about wanting fans to come out for the program’s home opener this weekend, and he’s putting his money where his mouth is.
On Tuesday, Barnum appeared on The Oregonian columnist John Canzano’s podcast and tried to make an offer people can’t refuse. He volunteered to personally pay for fans’ beers if they come out to support the Vikings against Western Oregon on Saturday.
“I’m not buying your ticket, but I’ll buy your beer,” Barnum told Canzano. When asked how many beers he’d be willing to buy, the 57-year-old head coach said “all of them.”
Portland State coach Bruce Barnum said he will buy your beer — all game — if you attend the Vikings home football game on Saturday.

Hillsboro Stadium seats 7,600 people and can be expanded up to a capacity of 10,000, so that’s potentially a lot of beers. Barnum was adamant about his proposal though.
Portland State is 0-2 on the season after losing to Hawaii and Washington State. The Vikings will kick off at 5:05 p.m. ET on Saturday, right in the middle of Oregon State-Idaho (3:30 p.m. ET) and Oregon-Stony Brook (7:30 p.m. ET).
“I don’t care if you’re watching the Oregon (or Oregon State) game,” Barnum said, “watch them on your phone. Buy your ticket and come to the game, I think you’ll like what you see.”
