After only two days, Commanders head coach Ron Rivera is already pleased with his two starting safeties. “I think Bobby McCain and Kam Curl right now are showing us their connection; their ability to work together has been very solid.”
As is often the experience early in an NFL training camp, the defense has the edge over the offense. Today apparently was no exception as the defense had an impressive day with multiple interceptions. McCain made it known he wants to keep building on that momentum.
Linebacker Cole Holcomb intercepted a pass and the very next play linebacker Jamin Davis nearly had an interception as well. As the defense saw its success today, they freely communicated with each other following solid defensive plays.
“It’s not more or less chirping, it’s more or less helping each other,” McCain said. “If you make a good play, you don’t want to belittle the guy, you want to help him. It’s OK to be excited with your teammates and celebrate. But maybe after the play, off to the sideline, tell them ‘hey, this is what you did, this is what I did and this is what you can do better.’ That’s how you have a winning culture.”

As McCain was wrapping up his time before the press, he was adamant on what should be transpiring with a good defense before every single snap.
“So if you line up and nobody says anything, you’re wrong,” he said. “If nobody’s saying anything, if nobody’s giving a call, if nobody’s making checks, if nobody’s seeing tendencies, if you’re not saying what you’re seeing, then you’re wrong.”
