Commanders host all-access rebrand event

June 12, 2022 by Redskins Wire

On Thursday, the Washington Commanders hosted another event, this one entitled, “The Washington Commanders Rebrand Process.”

Washington Gold Members were the honored guests in the EA Sports Lounge at FedEx Field, as the franchise provided access to those invited to learn a bit more about how The Washington Football Team became the Washington Commanders.

David Baldwin (Chief Ticketing Officer), Jason Wright (Team President) and Will Misselbrook (Chief Creative and Digital Officer) hosted the event.  Attendees were provided much background information regarding the process of naming the team the “Commanders.“

40,000 applications for the new team name had been submitted and put into a spreadsheet. Inappropriate names were immediately removed, then names with trademark issues were also removed.

“Warriors” was the most desired name early by the franchise, but officials were informed that some Native Americans declared their discomfort, and Dan Snyder determined to go a different direction.

Apparently, “RedHogs” was also very much desired but it did not poll as well with females. “Redwolves” as we all recall, was also highly desired but issues rose regarding the logo, mascot, and branding with several teams being named “wolves” of some sort. Seeking to avoid ongoing litigation, “Redwolves” was eliminated.

There was extensive work regarding having social media and the new franchise merchandise available the moment after the announcement was made on the Today Show during the 7 am broadcast hour, 2-22-2022.

Why was the name “Commanders” ultimately chosen? There was a desire for a connection that was indeed local, a name that promoted grit, strength and character, relating as well to the nation’s capital and its military and government associations in the DMV.

Jason Wright explained that the burgundy jersey is a continuation of the rich tradition of the burgundy and gold. The diamonds on the jerseys were chosen to represent the actual diamond shape of the city limits dating back to Benjamin Bannaker and his laying out of the city.

Wright also explained the NFL insists in an alternate jersey must come from colors in your original color combination. A fourth jersey is also going to be unveiled this season.

As for the new fight song, Wright feels it is important as is a new mascot, which will be unveiled this season.

After the conclusion of the presentation, Wright made himself available to listen to feedback from the Gold members, answering those approaching him with questions.

Special thanks to George Carmi, who provided a YouTube video further explaining the Gold members’ access day.
