The Washington Commanders have some key free agents set to hit the open market next month. Fortunately for Washington, only one full-time starter is scheduled for unrestricted free agency. The bad news is that player is Pro Bowl guard Brandon Scherff.
After franchising Scherff the last two seasons, the Commanders are unlikely to use the tag on any player this offseason. As for Scherff, he’s still a top-five guard in the NFL, but he missed six games in 2021 and hasn’t played a full schedule since 2016. Washington attempted to keep Scherff on a long-term deal, and the interest apparently was not mutual.
It’s time to separate for both parties.
Pro Football Focus recently released its annual list of the top 200 NFL free agents. Washington landed five players on the list, with Scherff leading the way.
