Commanders open training camp remembering 90 years

July 26, 2022 by Redskins Wire

July 26, 2022 the Washington Commanders begin another training camp celebrating their previous 90 years in the NFL.

1932  Boston Braves

Holding their first training camp in Lynn, Massachusetts at City Stadium, the team shared the name of the MLB National League Boston Braves franchise. The two also shared the same playing grounds, playing at Braves Field. Lud Wray coached that first Boston Braves NFL franchise to a 4-4-2 record.

1942 Washington Redskins

Coached by Ray Flaherty the team won their last nine games of the regular season and then defeated the Chicago Bears 14-6 in the NFL Championship game. They played their games in the old Griffith Stadium (1937-60) and had held their training camp at Brown Military Academy (Pacific Beach), San Diego, CA.

1952 Washington Redskins

Coached by former Green Bay coach Curly Lambeau, Washington finished a disappointing 4-8, in what was Hall of Fame quarterback Sammy Baugh’s last NFL season. The team’s training camp was held in Los Angeles, CA at Occidental College.

1962 Washington Redskins

Playing at District of Columbia Stadium (1961-68) later Robert F Kennedy Memorial Stadium (1969-96), the team finished 5-7-2 under head coach Bill McPeak. The season was the first for Bobby Mitchell in Washington, and Mitchell led the NFL with 72 receptions, 1,384 receiving yards and 98.9 receiving yards per game. It was the last season Washington held their training camp in Los Angeles at Occidental College (1946-1962).

1972 Washington Redskins

Washington won nine straight regular season games, finished 11-3, winning the NFC East. Two playoff wins followed (16-3 over Green Bay, 26-3 over Dallas in the NFC Championship game). However, Washington fell 14-7 to Miami in Super Bowl VII in Los Angeles. Running back Larry Brown was the AP MVP and OPY.

1982 Washington Redskins

In a strike-shortened season, Joe Gibbs led Washington to an 8-1 finish and the top playoff seed. In the playoffs Washington rolled Detroit 31-7, Minnesota 21-7 and Dallas 31-17. Washington then defeated Miami 27-17 in Super Bowl XVII. John Riggins was MVP rushing 38 times for 166 yards, including a fourth quarter 4th and 1 43-yard touchdown, providing Washington their first lead.

1992 Washington Redskins

Finishing 9-7, Washington traveled to Minnesota, defeating the Vikings 24-7 in the playoffs before traveling to San Francisco to lose in the second round 20-13. It was the 10th of 12 seasons that Joe Gibbs led Washington to a winning record. His only losing season had been 1988 (7-9). Gibbs retired after the 1992 season.

2002 Washington Redskins

The offense struggled through a 7-9 season, starting three different quarterbacks (Shane Matthews, Patrick Ramsey and Danny Wuerffel). If that wasn’t enough, they also used three place kickers (James Tuthhill, Jose Cortez and Brett Conway). This was the last season Washington conducted their training camp at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA (1963-94, 2001-02).

2012 Washington Redskins

Washington rallied to win their final seven games, finishing 10-6 atop the NFC East. Robert Griffin rushed for 815 yards and 7 touchdowns while completing 65.6% of his passes for 3200 yards, 20 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. Alfred Morris rushed for 1,613 yards averaging 4.8 yards a carry. Washington fell 24-14 to Seattle in the playoffs after leading 14-0. It was the 10th consecutive year training camp had been held in Ashburn 2003-12).
