Commanders sign two players ahead of minicamp

The Washington Commanders released kicker Brian Johnson and defensive back Will Adams Monday ahead of Tuesday’s mandatory minicamp. On Tuesday, Washington announced it had signed two players for the newly-created roster spots.

The Commanders signed defensive tackle Justin Hamilton and guard Willie Beavers Tuesday.

Hamilton, 28, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Louisiana-Lafayette. After initially signing with the Buffalo Bills, Hamilton spent time on the practice squads of the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks in 2015.

He made his NFL debut with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017, but was sent back down to the practice squad where the Kansas City Chiefs signed him to their active roster. Hamilton spent the rest of 2017 and the 2018 season with the Chiefs. From there, he spent most of the next three seasons with the Dallas Cowboys before a late-season stint on Denver’s roster last season.

The 6-foot-2, 315-pound Hamilton would add depth to Washington’s interior defense behind Jonathan Allen, Daron Payne and Phidarian Mathis.

Beavers, 28, entered the NFL in 2016 as a fourth-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings. He played collegiately at Western Michigan. He spent one season with the Vikings before being released. From there, he went to New England, back to Minnesota, Seattle, Chicago and San Francisco before spending the 2020 season with the Dallas Renegades of the XFL.

The 6-foot-5, 324-pounder spent the previous two seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, mostly on the practice squad before being released last month.
