Commanders tight end Antonio Gandy-Golden retires from NFL

Wide receiver Antonio Gandy-Golden was a fourth-round selection of the Washington Commanders in the 2020 NFL draft. On Wednesday, head coach Ron Rivera announced that Gandy-Golden was retiring from the NFL.

“I was a little surprised because I thought he was doing a really good job,” Rivera said via Matthew Paras of The Washington Times. “He’s a heck of a young man, and I do truly wish him all the best.”

According to Rivera, Gandy-Golden will return to school to further his education.

Gandy-Golden, who played at Liberty, was a fourth-round pick by Washington at a time when the team badly needed wide receiver depth opposite Terry McLaurin. Unfortunately, the 6-foot-4, 223-pound Gandy-Golden spent some time on injured reserve as a rookie and was unable to make his mark.

In 2021, Washington initially cut Gandy-Golden during final cuts but quickly re-signed him to the practice squad the following day. In the offseason, Gandy-Golden moved to tight end as he sought a better opportunity to make the roster. Rivera was optimistic about Gandy-Golden’s future.

Gandy-Golden went over 1,000 yards during his final three seasons at Liberty. In two NFL seasons, Gandy-Golden appeared in 10 games with one career reception for three yards. He also had one rushing attempt for 22 yards.
