Injury updates
The Washington Commanders are preparing for their season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and have several players dealing with injuries from the preseason/training camp. Jer’Zhan Newton was limited on Wednesday, off Thursday, and then returned to practice today.. Dan Quinn laid the plan out earlier in the week, but listed the 2nd round pick as doubtful for his first NFL game.
Marcus Mariota dealt with a groin injury that limited him to only one preseason appearance. Quinn said that injury was minor, and he could have played if it was the regular season, but now he’s dealing with another injury. He suffered a pec strain and will miss his first regular season with Washington. Jeff Driskel will be Jayden Daniels’ backup, and Quinn said the team is comfortable with two QBs active. UDFA QB Sam Hartman is also available on the practice squad.
Washington had five other players listed on this week’s injury report, and none of them have injury designations for Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. DT Daron Payne(back), and OT Trent Scott(knee) were limited on Wednesday. OT Brandon Coleman(shoulder), DE Clelin Ferrell(knee), and OLB Dante Fowler Jr(knee) were full participants all week.
Rookie LT Brandon Coleman was the big name to watch this week. A shoulder injury sidelined him for the three preseason games, but Quinn said that he was very close to being able to play in the last game vs the Patriots. He has practiced last week and this week, and will play on Sunday. Lucas will also play, and likely start, vs the Buccaneers, but Quinn didn’t name a starter today.
This week’s injury news hasn’t moved the point spread for the Washington Commanders season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They’re still 3.5 point underdogs, but the Over/Under dropped one point, going from 43.5 to 42.5. Check out all the odds for Sunday’s game at FanDuel Sportsbook.
