Injury updates

The Washington Commanders are preparing for their season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and have several players dealing with injuries from the preseason/training camp. Two players went from limited to did not participate today, and the other two limited players from yesterday returned to full participants.

Johnny Newton was limited yesterday, but didn’t practice today. Dan Quinn laid this plan out yesterday, and said the team will assess his foot issues tomorrow before determining if he’ll be to play on Sunday. That’s still looking like a long-shot at this point, but we won’t have that answer until the weekend.

Marcus Mariota dealt with a groin injury that limited him to only one preseason appearance. Quinn said that injury was minor, and he could have played if it was the regular season, but now he’s dealing with another injury. He popped up on the injury report with a chest injury on Wednesday, and wasn’t at today’s practice. If Mariota can’t play Sunday, Washington will have Jeff Driskel as the team’s backup, and they also have Trace McSorley and Sam Hartman on the practice squad.

DT Daron Payne(back), and OT Trent Scott(knee) both returned to practice today after being limited on Wednesday. OT Brandon Coleman(shoulder), DE Clelin Ferrell(knee), and OLB Dante Fowler Jr(knee) were full participants again. Fans had high hopes that Coleman could return to form after missing the preseason due to injury, but early reports had him still behind veteran Cornelius Lucas in this week’s practices. Dan Quinn has not announced a starter at left tackle, and could let that announcement happen when the offense lines up for their first snap in Tampa.

Did Not Participate

QB Marcus Mariota – Was at practice yesterday, but MIA today with a new chest injury

DT Jer’Zhan Newton – Dan Quinn said Newton would rest today, and will be assessed tomorrow to see if his feet are ready for Week 1.
