Comparing Commanders QB Carson Wentz and Kyler Murray contracts

July 23, 2022 by Redskins Wire

How does the Carson Wentz contract compare with the new Kyler Murray deal he signed Thursday?

Murray and the Arizona Cardinals drama, now behind the two, has a new contract that is projected to move him up the ladder of NFL quarterbacks’ contracts.

Murray, now having signed his five-year $230.5 million dollar deal, the former baseball and football starter at the University of Oklahoma now has a contract set to pay him possibly $500,000 more than Deshaun Watson’s Cleveland deal.

However, Watson’s deal is fully guaranteed and Murray’s is not. The Cardinals protected themselves a bit as well. The Cardinals noticeably limped down the stretch, losing four of their final five games, including a surprising loss to the Lions.

Wentz, according to Spotrac.com is set to earn $28,294,119 this season as the new quarterback for the Burgundy and Gold. Murray’s deal is through the 2028 season, while Wentz is under contract through 2024.

13.22 percent of the Commanders 2022 salary cap is set to count against the Wentz contract. His contract begins with a $22,000,001 base salary, tops on the Commanders. In addition, Wentz receives a $6,294,118 roster bonus.

One should notice the escalating nature of the Murray contract. Consequently, Murray will count 6.1 and 7.1 percent of the cap the next two seasons, while leaping to 20.3 percent in 2024. His cap hits are $12,669,481 (2022), $16,007,000 (2023). But the 2024-28 cap hits are $51,857,000, $45,614,500, $55,549,500, $43,535,000 and $46,350,000, with $160 million  guaranteed and $70,000,5000 is not.

Wentz on the other hand is frankly on a one-year rental by the Commanders front office. If he does not perform up to their standards, they can break all ties after only one season. On the other hand, if Wentz has a successful season, Washington can pick up his option for 2023 at $26.2 million and 2024 for $27.2 million.
