The Dallas Cowboys and offensive coordinator Kellen Moore mutually agreed to part ways Sunday, continuing head coach Mike McCarthy’s coaching staff changes.
In addition to Moore, quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier will not return. Nussmeier’s contract was up.
McCarthy released a statement Sunday night, confirming the two sides mutually agreed to part ways and thanking Moore for his tenure with the Cowboys.
“I want to thank Kellen for his deep commitment, hard work and dedication that were a core part of his time with the Cowboys,” McCarthy’s statement read, per Todd Archer of ESPN. “The production of our offense and his mentorship of Dak were at the center of Kellen’s impact, and we are grateful for his tenure and leadership.”
Moore has been Dallas’ offensive coordinator for the past four seasons, including one year before McCarthy arrived in 2020. During his four seasons, Moore has presided over an offense that has ranked in the top 10 in three of those four seasons.
The 34-year-old Moore began his coaching career in 2018 as quarterbacks coach for the Cowboys. Before that, he had a six-year NFL playing career, including the final three in Dallas from 2015-17.
Moore was a finalist for the Dolphins’ head-coaching job last offseason and interviewed with the Carolina Panthers last week. Moore will have plenty of options as an offensive coordinator.
The Washington Commanders have a vacancy at offensive coordinator. Should head coach Ron Rivera place a call to Moore?
It was revealed on Sunday that Rivera was waiting to speak to Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy for the same job with the Commanders. So why not interview Moore in the meantime?
It’s doubtful Moore would even pick the Commanders. Rivera is entering what some would call a lame-duck season in 2023, with new ownership likely coming aboard soon.
Moore’s success with Dallas proves he understands the modern passing game while committing to the run.
But you have to call Moore, right?
Meanwhile, some believe McCarthy will take over play-calling duties in Dallas in 2023. That should go well based on his final years in Green Bay calling plays.
