Dan Quinn speaks to the media before practice
The Washington Commanders are back on the practice fields in Ashburn for another day of training camp. The team had off yesterday, but they’ll be back in pads today. Dan Quinn spoke to the media, and said the team will be doing one on ones today, WR vs CB, OL vs DL, RB/TE vs LB. Washington claimed kicker Riley Patterson on waivers from the Jaguars and Quinn said he will compete with Ramiz Ahmed in camp. Washington also re-signed WR Byron Pringle and he will immediately get into the kick returner competition.
Jamin Davis has been working at DE during offseason workouts and training camp, but Quinn said he will be practicing at LB on early downs, and DE on third downs for the next series of practices. Braeden Daniels and Ricky Stromberg are second year players who are looking for their spot on the depth chart. Quinn said that Daniels will be working at tackle again, and Stromberg will be working at guard.

DQ says the next few days are “a big one” in preparation for the Jets practices next week. Going to be a lot of 1v1 work today.

Jamin Davis:
Dan Quinn said Jamin Davis will get some work at first and second down at LB. Said that was always the plan, so he doesn’t get too far from what he needs to do at that spot. But will stay as a DE on third down situations.

Kicker competition:
Quinn said claiming K Riley Patterson fits into the theme of “competition.” Brought back WR Byron Pringle to compete in the return game in particular.

Quinn on Daron Payne: “An absolute dog as a player… What’s more impressive to see he had more pass rush skills than I thought. you see how square and strong he is. Seeing his quickness for that size, it was rare.”
— John Keim (@john_keim) August 1, 2024
Johnny Newton:
Quinn said he was happy with the team reps Newton got earlier this week. Added that his progress will continue over the next few days #RaiseHail

Dyami Brown:
Quinn said Dyami Brown has jumped out to him in specific areas. Highlighted when QBs get out of the pocket to extend plays. Brown’s ability to accelerate and get open has been important

Bias for players they signed vs hold over players:
With recent roster moves Dan Quinn makes clear ‘there’s no bias’ in Washington: “There isnt a sacred cow…As an NFL ballplayer, they dont want to be bullshitted….It’s not on reputation, it’s on performance.”

Brandon Coleman
I caught up with Washington @Commanders rookie offensive lineman Brandon Coleman after today’s practice. The former TCU standout is having an impressive camp and has a legit chance to become the opening-day starter at left tackle.#NFL #nflinsider #raisehail pic.twitter.com/AlMLmiZz33

Daron Payne
New coaching staff:
I sat down with Commanders DT Daron Payne today.
He LOVES this new coaching staff and the energy they bring to practice every day.
Daron told me, “they want us running to the ball all day. There shouldn’t be a play that you shouldn’t be hunting toward the ball.” pic.twitter.com/5toXaWlp7Z

Defensive line depth:
This Washington Commanders defensive line up front is DEEP and talented.
Depth = Fresh
Daron Payne told me, “as a D-lineman when you’re playing a lot of snaps in a row, it takes a toll on you…now we can play fresh and that will help us at the end of games.” pic.twitter.com/wwtCpMisV2

Bobby Wagner:
Daron Payne lights up when I say the name “Bobby Wagner”
It’s not every day you can have a future HOF in the huddle.
Daron told me, “he’s a pro. You know a pro when you see one…I just know when I come in the morning he’s going to be in the weight room training hard.” pic.twitter.com/mJjqHB8jdU

Jayden Daniels:
Daron Payne goes against rookie QB Jayden Daniels every day in practice.
He’s impressed with number 5.
Daron told me, “he’s super fast. He feels us in the pocket and I feel like that’s good to have as a quarterback in this league because guys are rushing just all day long.” pic.twitter.com/9kPiHXVe3P

Quan Martin
Watch out for Quan Martin this season with the Commanders.
I know the coaching staff really likes him.
Quan told me that he is, “building off what I did last year, just know what I’m capable of.” pic.twitter.com/cPAQYigmmE
