Dan Quinn speaks to the media before practice
The Washington Commanders announced a contract extension for right guard Sam Cosmi, locking him in for four more years. Head coach Dan Quinn said the Cosmi is a Commander through and through and he expects him to be an anchor inside for years to come. Terms of the contract weren’t disclosed.
Another offensive lineman, rookie LT Brandon Coleman, has been dealing with a pec/shoulder injury that caused him to miss the three preseason games and most of training camp. He returned to practice last week, but Quinn needs to see him this week before naming the starter for Sunday’s season-opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. If Coleman isn’t ready, veteran swing tackle Cornelius Lucas will likely get the start at left tackle.
Second round pick Jer’Zhan Newton has also been dealing with injuries during the offseason, with surgeries on both feet for a Jones’ fracture, and then a soft-tissue issue with one of his feet that has caused him to miss more time. He’ll practice today, and then be limited on Friday. Quinn said he won’t know if the rookie defensive tackle will be ready to play until he sees him in practice again on Friday.
