Dan Quinn Presser: “We wanted to be a line of scrimmage team first”

July 24, 2025 by Hogs Haven

Dan Quinn speaks to the media before the second practice of training camp

Dan Quinn spoke to the media before the Washington Commanders hit the fields for the second practice of training camp. He talked about the emphasis on building up the line of scrimmage, saying if you’re strong there, you have a chance of being in every fight. Quinn was asked if this was to counter strengths in the NFC East, but said that was a byproduct of their overall strategy.

Quinn talked about adding future Hall of Famer Von Miller, and said the veteran pass rusher still has the qualities that made him great in his NFL career. You can’t teach the first step Miller possesses, and he still has the bend edge defenders need to beat tackles.

Andrew Wylie was playing right tackle with the ones, while first-round rookie Josh Conerly Jr was with the backups. Quinn said don’t read too much into that, and Conerly will run with the starters today. Washington will be putting players in multiple positions on the field and the depth chart during training camp as they look to find the best team for the season. Wylie was the starter at RT last season, but Conerly is expected to start this season with the veteran moving inside to guard, or to a reserve role.

Quinn made some headlines yesterday when he was asked about Sam Cosmi’s recovery from ACL surgery in January. He said that Week 1 was on the table which would be an amazing turnaround. He also said they would know more at the end of preseason, and he’s sticking with that for now. Quinn would like to avoid having to place Cosmi on injured reserve at the start of the season, which would allow him to be available during the first month of the season.

Watching the new veterans on the first day of training camp:

DQ said on first day of camp he made a point of watching new veteran players – Von, Deebo, etc – fitting in w the team and was impressed by what he saw pic.twitter.com/VesafOwJuG

Von Miller:

Dan Quinn said when watching Von Miller on tape, they saw a player who could still win off the edge & offered variety as a pass rusher. Also liked the “details he gets into as a pass rusher,” Quinn said. Added the initial quickness at edge is needed. They feel Miller still has it

DQ said Von Miller still has “it” Still has the explosive first step

Right tackle rotation:

Quinn said not to read much yet into the RT rotation. Andrew Wylie worked with the 1s yesterday; Josh Conerly will work with them today. Keep in mind: They did not hand the job to Jayden Daniels last year so no rookie will be automatically inserted as a starter.

As he did last year during camp, Dan Quinn will work multiple guys into multiple positions. So, for instance, Andrew Wylie got first-team reps at right tackle yesterday. Today, rookie Josh Conerly will go with the ones.

Trench work:

Dan Quinn: “We want to be a line-of-scrimmage team first. If you’re strong there, we feel you have a chance to be in every fight.”

Sam Cosmi’s recovery timeline:

Dan Quinn clarifies comments on Sam Cosmi for Week 1 – more about roster machinations between PUP & IR than Cosmi necessarily playing Week 1. Expects to have better idea late August, no rush in that decision pic.twitter.com/eOr4vpug7y

On Wed, Quinn said RG Sam Cosmi’s return for the opener was on the table. Also said needed more time to gauge. Today, Quinn stressed that “I’m not gonna say if he’ll be ready or not; just not sure yet. In another month we’ll have a good sense where he’s at.”

Dan Quinn clarifies his Sam Cosmi comments from yesterday about the guard possibly being ready for Week 1.

Essentially, they won’t know anything for a few weeks. But, there is a shot Cosmi’s positive trajectory puts him in a position to avoid IR and therefore be available for…

“I love that we scout and pick players for us, not the NFL.”:

“I love that we scout and pick players for us, not the NFL.” Dan Quinn said this before Day 2 practice. It truly speaks volumes about the team’s identity and the foundation he and the front office are building. Players clearly are buying into it and it shows. pic.twitter.com/9mawOONxab
