Dan Quinn speaks to the media before joint practice with the Dolphins
The Washington Commanders are having joint practices with the Miami Dolphins today and head coach Dan Quinn talked to the media before the 10am start. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel was on Quinn’s coaching staff with the Atlanta Falcons under OC Kyle Shanahan. McDaniel talked about his impact on his life and career yesterday, and Quinn said the young coach was a great teacher, and he could make the complex sound simple.
The quarterback room was thin due to injuries, so Washington signed Trace McSorley this morning. He will practice with the team and play against the Dolphins on Saturday. Marcus Mariota is dealing with a groin injury, but Quinn downplayed the severity, and time needed to recover(“it’s not long”). Undrafted free agent Sam Hartman suffered a shoulder injury in his NFL debut vs the Jets and won’t be able to practice or play this week. Jayden Daniels is expected to get the start again, and should get more than one series before veteran Jeff Driskel takes over.
The wide receiver competition continues to be a topic that reporters ask Dan Quinn about. There have been rumors, whispers, and reports about Jahan Dotson’s lackluster camp, and his late use in the first preseason game. Quinn was asked about it again today and he said they are right in the middle of the competition, and then brought up Olamide Zacchaeus as a receiver who has impressed.

Dan Quinn said QBs Marcus Mariota (groin) and Sam Hartman (shoulder) are out for Saturday’s preseason game in Miami. Hence the decision to bring in Trace McSorley, who flew in last night, got his physical this morning before their joint practice, and will play Saturday.

Value of joint practices:
Quinn spoke highly about the value of joint practices. Mentioned the amount of different looks and competition players will see and what it means for players who don’t get much time in practice to get snaps in preseason games. It’s an chance to show skill sets for 31 other teams

Pushing the CBs during this week’s practice and game:
This is interesting from Quinn – they’re going to put DBs in much harder positions today and in preseason vs Dolphins than they would in a game. Want to push guys and see how they respond. 1v1 coverage, single high, etc pic.twitter.com/XRU4spdRzm

Quinn said we are right in them middle of the competition at WR. Highlighted Olamide Zaccheaus and said we’ll looks at several receivers today. Also mentioned that special teams will play a role in deciding players for the position

They’re doing everything they can to figure out what to do with Jahan Dotson. I think everything is on the table. Everything. https://t.co/fwC0oE704m

Dotson has not emerged. Zaccheaus has been very consistent all summer. https://t.co/PUlXABuJNJ

Zach Ertz’s absence:
Zach Ertz not here. His wife is 9 months pregnant so maybe some great news for that family coming
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) August 15, 2024
Quinn said Zach Ertz will not play against the Dolphins on Saturday or participate in practice. Not injury related, but “an excellent reason”

Interception:
Terry McLaurin scored on Kendall Fuller in one of the first plays of practice. Fuller capped practice by picking off Jayden Daniels’ intended for McLaurin. “It was just an out route that I love to make plays on.”
Which is true. Had pick-6s against the Texans and Cowboys in ’22.…
