The Tar Heels couldn’t have asked for a better Saturday.
North Carolina spoiled Mike Krzyzewski’s final game at Cameron Indoor Stadium with a 94-81 upset over Duke. In addition to derailing the rival’s celebratory occasion, the Tar Heels fortified their March Madness bid with a monumental road victory over the No. 4 Blue Devils.
Unfortunately, Dick Vitale was unable to attend the seminal showdown. The ESPN analyst, who was diagnosed with lymphoma and vocal cord dysplasia last October, has stepped away from broadcasting to focus on his recovery.
Yet he was certainly watching. On Saturday night, Vitale congratulated the Tar Heels in a Twitter post calling them the “team of the night.”
The VBDI says TEAM OF THE NIGHT – @UNC_Basketball as they were sensational tonight to beat Duke at Cameron on a day many felt after the 1st meeting that they didn’t have shot . Couldn’t tell that to Coach DAVIS & BACOT-DAVIS-LOVE-MANEK-BLACK / tip my hat to the TAR HEELS Baby !

Despite his close friendship with Krzyzewski, Vitale tipped his hat to the Tar Heels for prevailing.
Last month, Duke ran away with an 87-67 blowout over North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As a result, Hubert Davis’ team was a considerable underdog to ruin Coach K’s farewell. As Vitale said, few onlookers gave them a shot at upending the ACC powerhouse.
According to CBS Sports bracket expert Jerry Palm, the bubble team now has a spot following “the best win on North Carolina’s tournament resume.”
Both adversaries will now set their sights on the ACC tournament, which begins Tuesday at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.
