Former Super Bowl MVP quarterback Drew Brees spent his first year in retirement as an analyst for NBC. But he may have a new employer in 2022.
According to sports media insider Andrew Marchand, Brees might be moving from NBC to Fox. Per the report, he has been identified as a candidate to replace Troy Aikman as the No. 1 color commentator on their NFL game coverage.
Greg Olsen has been considered the top candidate for the job since Aikman’s departure. Fox has already named Kevin Burkhardt as their replacement for play-by-play commentator Joe Buck.
If Olsen does get the job, Brees could be given the No. 2 team job. In that scenario he would be working with either Adam Amin or Joe Davis.
But Brees isn’t an overly popular candidate for the job to say the least. The majority of the responses to this report from Marchand have been negative. Fans seem to find Brees boring as an analyst and aren’t convinced he’ll be better as a color commentator:
Why? He’s so freaking boring. https://t.co/QCkUkFpPoA

having him and Tony Dungy together for pregame and halftime was one of the most baffling sports programming decisions I’ve ever seen https://t.co/1DehNLTVDv

The funny thing about him liking games more is that he’s far better in the studio. https://t.co/fjGkyHe8HS

Well that’s not exactly what I expected but it makes sense https://t.co/kwmk990cQv

Drew Brees has reportedly expressed more interest in doing color commentary than studio analysis though. He has experience in the field, working alongside Mike Tirico for Notre Dame games and during Football Night in America.
The 2022 NFL offseason has given us the biggest shakeup of media figures changing networks in years.
That carousel may very well continue all the way into the summer.
