ESPN Analyst Names The Best Fit For Amari Cooper

March 6, 2022 by The Spun

dallas cowboys wide receiver amari cooper warms up

If the Dallas Cowboys part ways with Amari Cooper, ESPN’s Louis Riddick sees the New England Patriots as an ideal landing spot.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Cowboys are “likely” to release Cooper before his $20 million contract becomes guaranteed on March 20. On Sunday morning’s SportsCenter, via NESN’s Adam London, Riddick suggested Foxborough as the best destination for the 27-year-old wide receiver.

“Yeah, I think this has New England Patriots written all over it ’cause they really need someone who has No. 1-wide receiver capability in the form of Amari Cooper,” Riddick said.

New England hasn’t had a 1,000-yard receiver in the last two years. Cooper, meanwhile, has broken that barrier five times in seven seasons. Even last year’s underwhelming 865 yards came just one yard shy of Patriots-leader Jakobi Meyers.

While Cooper could provide fellow Alabama alum Mac Jones with a top target, Riddick added that inconsistency remains a concern.

“This issue with Amari is getting him to do this over 17 games,” Riddick said. “That’s two teams now that have said, ‘Look, you’re good, but you’re just not worth the money we paid you that was really based on projecting you to be a guy who was a 90-, 100-catch guy per year. He just hasn’t really been able to really dial in and tap into his athletic ability and his football-playing ability at that level.”

Bill Belichick, as the ESPN analyst alluded to, tends to get the most out of his players.

“New England usually pulls it out of people in a way that many other people aren’t able to. Look, for Mac Jones, this would be the perfect kind of weapon he needs on the outside to go along with a very strong running game and one of the best receiving tight ends in Hunter Henry.”

Does Cooper joining the Patriots make sense?
