The 2024 NFL season is now over, and each team will be making tons of offseason moves. With the Washington Commanders having their best season in 33 years, expect the team to make moves aplenty. General manager Adam Peters has a lot of work to do to help this franchise again. Last offseason turned out to be very successful, as Washington acquired players like Austin Ekeler, Zach Ertz, Bobby Wagner, Dorance Armstrong, and Dante Fowler Jr. Here are five veterans the Commanders should pursue in 2025.
Five Players the Washington Commanders Should Pursue This Offseason
Tee Higgins
The top free agent on the market this offseason, Higgins would be a perfect No. 2 wideout to complement Terry McLaurin. Higgins spent the past five seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, catching passes from Joe Burrow. The veteran receiver barely missed game time but dealt with injuries in back-to-back contract seasons. Higgins previously had two 1,000-yard seasons with the Bengals in 2021 and 2022. Together, Higgins and McLaurin would certainly help this dynamic offense led by quarterback Jayden Daniels. The Commanders also have the cap space to make it happen.
Myles Garrett
Though not a free agent, Garrett announced that he wanted to be traded from the Cleveland Browns after eight seasons. According to reports, the veteran pass rusher wanted to join Daniels and the culture that Washington is building. With the team expected to lose Jonathan Allen, the Commanders are looking for another ferocious pass rusher. An All-Pro like Garrett would help bolster the defensive line alongside Dante Fowler Jr. and Dorance Armstrong. He also has a Defensive Player of the Year award, which he won in 2023.
Amari Cooper
Another veteran wide receiver on the market, Cooper would be another quality No. 2 wideout for the Commanders. The 30-year-old Cooper has 10 years in the NFL under his belt and would bring his experience to Washington’s offense. The veteran struggled with drops in 2024, but would probably benefit catching passes from the young and flashy Daniels. Cooper spent the second half of last season with the Buffalo Bills after being traded from the Browns. He also had stints with the then-Oakland Raiders and Dallas Cowboys.
Khalil Mack
Another pass rusher the Commanders could pursue is Khalil Mack, who is a free agent. The 33-year-old defensive end could also bring his experience to Washington’s defensive line along with Fowler, Armstrong, and possibly Garrett. Mack has had a late-career resurgence over the past two seasons as both a pass rusher and run defender. He had 88 quarterback pressures in 2023, which matched his total in 2016. Mack has spent the past three seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers, after playing for the Raiders and Chicago Bears.
Ronnie Stanley
The Commanders are also looking for a quality offensive lineman in free agency, and they should look no further than tackle Ronnie Stanley. Stanley has spent his entire career with the Baltimore Ravens since 2016. The one-time All-Pro never recaptured his incredible 2019 form, but he has remained an above-average starter throughout his time in the NFL. The veteran returned to top form in 2024, posting a strong 79.6 PFF pass-blocking grade through the first 12 weeks. Washington’s current starting tackles are Andrew Wylie and Brandon Coleman, who are both below average. However, the signing of Stanley would give Washington a massive upgrade on the offensive line.
