No. 17 at TPC Sawgrass has claimed plenty of balls in its rich history. But today, the island hole is taking far more victims than normal.
Though the heavy rains have stopped at this year’s Players Championship in Ponte Verda Beach, the wind continues to howl at ridiculous speeds.
Since the resumption of play at noon ET today, five of nine players have found the penalty area off the tee at the seventeenth.

Fans from around the golf world took to Twitter to react to these ridiculous conditions. Many seem to be pretty happy to watch these seasoned pros struggle like the average player.
“Everyone was yelling about it but the wind is blowing at 25 mph at the Players right now and I’d just watch people get destroyed at 17 all day,” one wrote.
“ESPN needs a 17th hole feed for today,” another added.
“Oh my… the 17th is gonna be a BLOODBATH!” another said.
Fun vibe out at 17 with Billy Ho and bagman Fooch. A mid-flight correction with “that’s over the green”, was followed by “I knew it”, confirming the looper’s at fault for the ball going kerplunk. The mic went quiet before we could hear more blame game. 🤩

4 tee shots at 17 have been hit. 4 guys in the top 20 in the world rankings. 4 balls in the water. Collin’s just hit the front wall and splashed. This is unbelievable. https://t.co/pjOpUKkOaB

Due to multiple weather delays over the first two days of play, the tournament has yet to complete its first round. Now playing catchup the rest of the weekend, a Monday/Tuesday finish is likely for this year’s Players Championship.
Expect more balls in the water at No. 17 as the day goes on.
