San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich made history on Friday night, becoming the all-time winningest head coach in the NBA.
Popovich surpassed Don Nelson with the Spurs’ latest win. He currently owns 1,336 wins as an NBA coach. That’s an awfully impressive number.
After the win on Friday night, Popovich addressed his latest accomplishment. He said an accomplishment like this doesn’t belong to just him, it belongs to every player, coach and fan that has been part of this journey.
“It’s just a testament to a whole lot of people,” Popovich said. “Something like this does not belong to one individual. Basketball’s a team sport. You preach to your players that they have to do it together and that’s certainly been the case in my life with all the wonderful players and coaches, the staff that I’ve been blessed with, the support of this wonderful city. The fans support us no matter what. All of us share in this record. It’s not mine. It’s ours, here in the city.”

“Congrats to Gregg Popovich on becoming the NBA’s all-time winningest coach. But deserving significant credit for this honor are 1) Tim Duncan, the most underappreciated superstar leader ever and 2) RC Buford, the NBA’s best GM who stole Ginobili, Parker & Kawhi in the draft,” Skip Bayless wrote.
