How has Eric Bieniemy impacted the Commanders’ draft process thus far?

April 21, 2023 by Redskins Wire

When the Washington Commanders hired offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy away from the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason, fans and players were excited.

Players believed Bieniemy could take their games to another level, while fans see Kansas City’s offensive success and drool at the thought of anything similar. Sure, Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce aren’t coming with Bieniemy, but the Commanders have outstanding talent at the skill positions and added to the offensive line this offseason.

For Washington, it’s all about the quarterback position. Can Bieniemy develop Sam Howell into a franchise quarterback?

In his pre-draft press conference Thursday, head coach Ron Rivera was asked about Bieniemy’s involvement in the team’s draft process thus far.

“It’s been very interesting, very energetic,” Rivera said. “I mean, the dude is constantly on the go. I love his responses to the readings. I love his comments. His insight is very good. We’ve all really pretty much have learned very quickly what he’s looking for, for what we want to do offensively, and how he sees players fitting.”

Washington’s players reported to Ashburn for the start of the voluntary offseason program this week and got the chance to spend time with Bieniemy. Rivera said it’s been a positive experience.

“I think Eric has brought some optimism, and you listen to the guys talk about it,” Rivera said. “That’s been exciting. It really has, so very encouraged by that.”

One interesting note to Washington’s pre-draft process is its interest in Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker. Bieniemy personally attended Tennessee’s pro day, and the Commanders had Hooker in for a visit. He was the only quarterback to visit.

What does this mean?

I guess we’ll find out Washington’s level of interest on draft day.

It will be interesting to see Bieniemy’s influence on Washington’s offensive picks. What type of offensive linemen will Bieniemy target? Is he looking for road graders or pass protectors?

Bieniemy will have significant input on the draft, something he didn’t always have in Kansas City with Andy Reid in charge.
