After the Washington Commanders defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 28-22 in the season opener, head coach Ron Rivera met with the media.
Rivera was in a good mood and discussed the play of quarterback Carson Wentz. Rivera first discussed Wentz’s interceptions and what happened, saying he was late on one of the throws, but praised the way Wentz took accountability.
“The guy played his butt off and did a lot of good things,” Rivera said. “Really happy for him and really excited for him.”
Later, Rivera was asked about dealing with the ups and downs of Wentz’s play through an entire season, such as how he threw two interceptions Sunday, followed by two outstanding touchdown drives.
Rivera gave a hilarious answer.
“Take antacids,” he said while laughing.
Then, Rivera went into detail about Wentz.
“We’re going to ride with him,” Rivera said. “No matter how you look at it, we’re gonna ride with him. We’ll go with the good, we’ll go with the bad, but that’s the truth of the matter. He’s a guy we did a lot of research on. We did a lot of work. We really did. Once we found that he was available, we watched tape and did all the analytics on him, and we felt pretty comfortable and confident to say that he’s the kind of guy we need around here. He’s got some courage and will step up into the fray and accept responsibility. I’m very proud of what he did tonight.”
Wentz completed 27 of 41 passes for 313 yards, with four touchdowns and two interceptions in the win.
