Sometimes the best jokes write themselves. That’s particularly true when it pertains to the Washington Football Team.
The latest joke on Washington was, as you’d expect, preventable.
It all began before Week 14 when the Cowboys brought their own custom benches to FedEx Field. The Cowboys allegedly brought the benches to Washington because some Seattle players told them the heated benches at FedEx Field kept going on and off during their Monday night loss to the WFT in Week 12.
There was probably some gamesmanship going on with the Cowboys. Remember, head coach Mike McCarthy all but guaranteed a win leading into that game.
But, some in Washington considered it disrespectful.
The following week, Washington traveled to Philadelphia to play the Eagles on Tuesday night. Washington said it was bringing custom-made benches with them to Lincoln Financial Field and would use them for the remainder of the season.
The Eagles defeated a shorthanded Washington team.
Fast forward to Week 16 and the rematch with the Cowboys. Washington again brought its benches to Dallas, playing indoors at around 70 degrees.
You know the rest. The Cowboys obliterated Washington, 56-14. And the benches will now go down as another embarrassing moment in recent franchise history.
On Tuesday, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones joined 105.3 The Fan in Dallas and discussed those benches.
“Those benches, I just as soon keep them, if we can lock them down out there and maybe keep them there permanently,” Jones joked.
It’s never great when the 79-year-old owner of your archrival trolls you after his team embarrasses you in prime time.
Jones did make sure to say he was good friends with Washington owner Dan Snyder before making one last hoke about the benches.
“We’ve had good luck with those benches,” Jones said.
The bench talk is no big deal in the grand scheme of things. However, this is Washington we are talking about. If you are going to make that type of grand gesture, you better win the game — or not lose by 42 points.
