Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to be traded ahead of the 2022 season. However, his value took a considerable hit on Monday afternoon.
The Steelers, in addition to the Indianapolis Colts, were believed to be one of two teams interested in the San Francisco 49ers quarterback. However, on Monday Pittsburgh signed free agent Mitch Trubisky to replace Ben Roethlisberger as the team’s new starting quarterback.
So where does that leave us on a Jimmy Garoppolo trade? Well, it looks like the Colts might be the only team in the mix. That means the Niners don’t have a whole lot of leverage.
“The #Steelers had been in the mix on Jimmy G with the #49ers, but signing Mitch Trubisky means they are out. The #Colts still have interest in Jimmy Garoppolo,” tweeted NFL insider Ian Rapoport.

“Trubisky signs with the Steelers, which very likely takes Jimmy Garoppolo out of consideration there. The Colts remain the clubhouse favorite for Garoppolo’s services,” said David Lombardi.

The Steelers made the right call signing Mitch Trubisky over Jimmy Garoppolo. Why give up assets for Garoppolo and take on his salary when you could just sign Trubisky? It was a no-brainer for Pittsburgh.
“I think the #Steelers did the right thing by signing Mitchell Trubisky over giving up assets for Jimmy G. I don’t think there’s much of a drop-off when you factor in upside,” said Mike Kaye.

There’s a growing belief the 49ers will wait until training camp – when Garoppolo is healthy and teams get desperate – to trade the veteran quarterback. In doing so, they might be able to fetch a first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
One idea from value maximization standpoint could be to wait til camp, see who is desperate, see who suddenly has a new need for whatever reason—not everyone is going to have the position squared away. Gives Jimmy G chance to be healthy also. https://t.co/9jTmW7haOv

From the sound of it, the 49ers aren’t going to be moving Jimmy Garoppolo anytime soon. The saga continues.
