Kliff Kingsbury and Joe Whitt Jr speak to the media before practice
Joe Whitt Jr. talked about the Washington Commanders close win over the New Orleans Saints. There were a lot of missed opportunities, including several potential interceptions that were dropped. Whitt continues to point out his defense needs to produce more turnovers, and he’s also working on 4th quarter defense which needs a lot of improvement. Marshon Lattimore’s debut with Washington was a success, and you could tell that his former Saints teammates respected him, because they only looked his way twice, and didn’t throw either time.
Whitt said it’s great to get Jonathan Allen back on the practice field, and he looks forward to seeing him back on the field in the “near future”. Allen’s 21-day window was opened yesterday, but it would be a surprise if he was available this weekend when Washington hosts the Eagles. Whitt called Philadelphia the hottest team in the league, and talked about how good their offensive line has been. Washington will have to play a complete game to beat the 12-2 Eagles, and stopping Saquon Barkley later in the game will be key for that to happen.

Missed opportunities vs the Saints:
Joe Whitt addressing the media. Never want to complain about a win, but he said it shouldn’t have come down to a two-point conversion. Several opportunities that the defense missed on

Marshon Lattimore:
Joe Whitt Jr. said Marshon Lattimore “played really, really well,” against the Saints. No targets. Said the quarterbacks looked Lattimore’s way only twice. That’s a team that knows what Lattimore can do. He doesn’t expect future teams to shy away from him like that.

Whitt said Lattimore had a good command of the system. Led the effort in communication

Jonathan Allen:
Joe Whitt says he’s been real impressed with Jon Allen and hopes he “can help us in the near future”

Joe Whitt Jr. on Jon Allen: “I just want to see how he moves and not get too excited about getting him back in. But it’s a positive, positive start.”

Philadelphia Eagles:
Whitt said the Eagles are the hottest team in the league. Need to play a full 60 minute game
— Zach Selby (@ZachSelbyWC) December 19, 2024
More turnovers/fixing 4th quarter defense:
Whitt is pleased with the direction the defense is going, but they must get more turnovers and have to fix the fourth quarter points. He said it falls on him to fix that
— Zach Selby (@ZachSelbyWC) December 19, 2024
Making sure they get it done:
Whitt: “My job is not to tell them what to do it’s to make sure they get it done.”

Kliff Kingsbury joked about some “voodoo shit” at the end of the Saints game with the clock stopped for 3-4 seconds, and said he was surprised they left New Orleans with the win. Jayden Daniels looks refreshed after the bye week, and that will help him down the final stretch of the regular season.
Washington is preparing to host the Philadelphia Eagles, and Kingsbury said he didn’t call a very good game the first time around. He said they were on a short week, and now they’ve got the full week, and experience from the games since then, to make adjustments and see how far the team has come since the first game. One thing that every team has been trying to adjust for is Eagles DT Jalen Carter.

Marcus Mariota:
Kliff Kingsbury said Marcus Mariota’s influence on the quarterback room has been incredible. Been open and honest and been helpful in helping develop Jayden. Highly revered in the building because of his work ethic
— Zach Selby (@ZachSelbyWC) December 19, 2024
Zach Ertz:
Kingsbury said Ertz is a safety net for the quarterback. Such a vital part of the offense. Ertz is in the concussion protocol but was listed as a DNP with concussion/NIR(rest)

Jayden Daniels:
Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury agreed QB Jayden Daniels looks refreshed after the bye.

Mike Sainristil at WR:
Kliff Kingsbury joked that he’s talked to the coaching staff about moving rookie CB Mike Sainristil to WR with the injuries up front.
Sainristil played WR early on at Michigan. pic.twitter.com/ux6sxO0Z3Q

Jalen Carter:
Kliff Kingsbury: “[Jalen Carter] is as good a player as there is in the NFL right now. He wrecked us in the first game.”
— John Keim (@john_keim) December 19, 2024
Clock stopping at end of Saints game:
Kliff Kingsbury noticed the clock stoppage vs NO immediately. “I lived down there for a year so I know all the voodoo shit. I thought here we go again so I was actually shocked we won that game.”
— John Keim (@john_keim) December 19, 2024
Rematch with the Eagles:
Kliff Kingsbury on Eagles rematch: “The first time we played them on a short week … I had way too much in and I felt like we played tentative. I didn’t call a very good game. Now, to have the full week process … try to make the proper adjustments and see how far we’ve come…
— Ben Standig (@BenStandig) December 19, 2024
Terry McLaurin
Underdog mentality:
Big one on Sunday. Commanders vs. Philly.
Washington WR Terry McLaurin says this team is ready to fight, “we’re up for the challenge. Last game doesn’t dictate what’s going to happen this weekend…I think we’re an improved team since the last time we played them.” pic.twitter.com/31xAezolcT

Tyler Biadasz
Returning to play the Eagles:
Commanders center Tyler Biadasz is back!
The 102.6 fever that he had before the Saints game is no more.
I asked Tyler about his availability for Sunday’s game against the Eagles.
With a big smile, Tyler said, “I’m playing. I’m playing. You can’t get me out of this game.” pic.twitter.com/CaIoPKAmR3

Nick Allegretti
Underdog mentality:
Embracing that underdog mentality.
The Commanders are all about it.
Left guard Nick Allegretti said, “just to believe that the rest of the league, the rest of the fans out of there don’t believe in you. I kind of love that. It’s cool.” pic.twitter.com/4jVvfpslzj
