Joe Whitt Jr. Presser: The tackling wasn’t to the standard in Week 1

September 13, 2024 by Hogs Haven

Joe Whitt Jr and Kliff Kingsbury talk to the media

The Washington Commanders coordinators were behind the microphone before today’s practice. The team is preparing for their home opener against the New York Giants, but questions from Week 1’s blowout loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers remain. Defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. was up first, and talked about several things that went wrong in a very disappointing performance from his side of the ball. The team lost leverage, had communication issues, and failed to finish the QB. Washington also struggled on 3rd downs, and didn’t force any turnovers.

Another big issue was the poor tackling that Whitt Jr. said wasn’t up to his standard. There were more missed tackles than he anticipated, and that needs to get cleaned up by the coaches and the players. He said you don’t tackle to the ground in practice anymore, so they need to make sure they’re lined up and taking that extra step when they’re tackling in games.

Poor defensive performance:

DC Joe Whitt Jr says three reasons for poor defensive performance:
1) Losing leverage
2) Communication Issues
3) Not finishing at the QB

— Mitchell Tischler (@Mitch_Tischler) September 12, 2024

Joe Whitt Jr. said three main factors led to third down struggled in Week 1:

1. Losing leverage
2. Not taking QB down
3. Communication issues

Says it’s on him and the staff to deal with. Lack of turnovers also an issue at Tampa.

The message – “Make them beat us.”

— Ben Standig (@BenStandig) September 12, 2024

More Whitt on reason’s for Sunday’s struggles: “First one, losing leverage in certain situations. At times [got to the QB], but didn’t get him down. Then it was communication issues. All those areas are my responsibility to make sure it doesn’t happen.”

— John Keim (@john_keim) September 12, 2024

Inability to get off the field:

Joe Whitt Jr. addressing the media. A lot of the problems, he said, came from their inability to get off the field. Credited leverage and communication as sources of that issue. Wants to make sure the defense is playing fast and executing

Giants LT Andrew Thomas:

Whitt: Giants have a really good left tackle that can block anybody in the league

— Zach Selby (@ZachSelbyWC) September 12, 2024

Communication breakdown:

Whitt said the defense did a good job of communicating in practice but not in the game. It’s on him to make sure the players are on the same page

— Zach Selby (@ZachSelbyWC) September 12, 2024

Poor tackling:

Whitt said the level of tackling was not up to his standard. “It shouldn’t happen.”

— Zach Selby (@ZachSelbyWC) September 12, 2024

Joe Whitt Jr.: “We missed more tackles than I anticipated.”

— John Keim (@john_keim) September 12, 2024

Fixing mistakes:

Whitt said, “The plays we gave up, the guys have to understand this when you put that on film people will test it. You have to make sure it’s shored up or we’ll keep seeing it.”

— John Keim (@john_keim) September 12, 2024

Communication from the coach’s box:

Malik Nabers:

Whitt on Giants WR Malik Nabers: “Just a really talented young man that can stretch the field, get in and out of breaks. He can bend. He has a really good catch radius. He’ll be a challenge.”

— John Keim (@john_keim) September 12, 2024

Kliff Kingsbury liked the effort from his players in Week 1, and mentioned the low number of penalties(2) on offense, and one of them was questionable(Olamide Zaccheaus’s illegal block above the waist). The production wasn’t there from the receiving corps, with the RBs and TE Zach Ertz being the leading receivers.

The Washington Commanders leading rusher is rookie QB Jayden Daniels, who just won Offensive Rookie of the Week, after rushing for 88 yards in his NFL debut. Kingsbury defended Daniels 16(14 actual) rushes during the game, and said it was a combination of fight or flight from a rookie in his first game, and getting the looks from the Buccaneers’ defense to give him the opportunity to run. Daniels also turned the “worst call Kingsbury ever called” into a touchdown run.

Jayden Daniels:

Kliff Kingsbury said Daniels scored despite “one of the worst play calls in my career.” Said he called a speed option with no check and TB overplayed it. But KK loved that Daniels stuck his foot in the ground and cut back and ran “a couple guys over.” Showed “competitive spirt.”

Kliff Kingsbury on Jayden Daniels: “I called one of the worst plays I’ve ever called in my career, and he just took it and ran into the end zone.”

Jayden Daniels’ rushing ability:

Noah Brown:

Kliff Kingsbury is addressing the media. Noah Brown is coming along, and they plan to help him keep ascending. Kingsbury said Brown has had some big games in the NFL and can play outside and inside

— Zach Selby (@ZachSelbyWC) September 12, 2024

Update: Kingsbury misspoke here. Noah Brown was a healthy scratch for Tampa due to being acquired days before Week 1. He has no injury, per the team. Hasn’t been on the jnjury report and has been fully practicing since acquired.

Brown did miss time this summer in Houston with a… https://t.co/9snyknmq4i

Austin Ekeler:

Kingsbury said Austin Ekeler still has some juice to him. Has worked hard ever since he joined the team

— Zach Selby (@ZachSelbyWC) September 12, 2024

Giants DL Dexter Lawrence:

Kingsbury on New York’s Dexter Lawrence: “Now that Donald is gone he’s as much a problem as anybody in the league. Him & Maxx Crosby are probably the 2 most disruptive d-linemen in the league; Chris Jones is another. When [DL] goes head up on your center it’s like, ‘Good luck.'”

— John Keim (@john_keim) September 12, 2024

Terry McLaurin

Fast start:

Terry McLaurin addressing the media in the locker room. Said it’s extremely important for them to go out and have a fast start
