John Madden’s wife and now widow, Virginia, sent a strong message to the NFL and city of Oakland during Madden’s memorial on Monday night.
Virginia’s message had to do with the Raiders – the Oakland Raiders, whom the late Madden once coached, to be exact. John’s now widow wants the NFL to put a team back in Oakland.
“He (John Madden) believed in the Raiders, I believe in the Raiders… the Oakland Raiders… Oakland needs a football team,” Virginia said.

The Raiders’ move from Oakland to Las Vegas ruffled some feathers, especially within the fan base. It was a smart economic move by the NFL, but still doesn’t sit well with NFL fans.
The Raiders clearly meant the world to John Madden and his wife. There’s no doubt the organization’s move to Vegas probably irritated John and Virginia.
“Does that show where John and Virginia stood with raiders move to LV? Never did get to hear maddens thoughts on the move,” one fan tweeted.
“He wasn’t a fan of the move,” a fan replied. “Was a few stories about that.”
Virginia Madden’s message for the NFL tugged on a few heartstrings. Fans miss the Raiders playing in Oakland.
“Makes me miss the Oakland Raiders…nothing like walking down the halls of the coliseum yelling Raiders…at the top of your lungs,” a fan tweeted in response to Virginia’s message.
Maybe the NFL will one day consider placing a team back in Oakland. It’s what John would have wanted.
