Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Criticizes LeBron: NBA World Reacts

April 3, 2022 by The Spun

Kareem Abdul Jabbar receiving the presidential medal.

NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar didn’t hold back when discussing his thoughts on LeBron James on Sunday.

Abdul-Jabbar criticized LeBron for some past events after receiving a trophy for his social justice efforts on Sunday afternoon.

The NBA legend has been critical of LeBron for his comments on the COVID-19 vaccine, among other things. Abdul-Jabbar would be open to meeting with LeBron.

“I wouldn’t mind doing it if he would take the time. I definitely got the time,” Abdul-Jabbar said of speaking with him, per the LA Times. “I admire the things that he’s done that have gotten all our attention. Sending a whole school to college? Wow. That’s amazing. His thoughtfulness and willingness to back it up with his wallet, you got to give him credit for that.

“So I’m not throwing stones. I just wish he wouldn’t — you know, some of the things he’s done, he should be embarrassed about. That’s just where I’m coming from.”

While Abdul-Jabbar has also had major praise for LeBron, it’s rare to see one legendary athlete be this honest in regards to another.

NBA fans have taken to social media to react.

“This should distract the talk shows from talking bout LeBron sitting at a key part of the season to win the scoring title,” one fan tweeted.

“Doesn’t seem necessary to call him on that publicly. Also – didn’t Kareem’s politics evolve a lot when he retired?” one fan added on Twitter.

Earlier this year, LeBron was asked if he had a response to Kareem regarding his criticism on the COVID-19 vaccine comments.

“No, I don’t have a response to Kareem at all,” James said in late December. “And if you saw the post and you read the tag, you’re literally, honestly asking, ‘Help me out?’ Help me kind of figure it all out. We’re all trying to figure this pandemic out. We’re all trying to figure out COVID and the new strains and the flu, I think people forgot about the flu. People literally forgot about the flu during these times. Like, that’s still going around. This is flu season. So people have forgotten about the flu. People have forgotten about common colds. That happens. Especially with a lot of our kids that are in school. My daughter is in first grade so a lot of these kids are getting common colds and getting the flu.

“But, no. I don’t have any response to Kareem. At all.”

LeBron will likely pass Kareem on the NBA’s all-time scoring list before his career is over.
