Kirk Herbstreit is going to have another major gig during the 2022 football season.
In addition to his duties with College GameDay, he’s going to be the main color commentator on Amazon’s Thursday Night Football.
Amazon is finalizing a deal with him, while the company has still not named the play-by-play announcer.
Amazon is expected to finalize a deal with ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit to be the main analyst for Thursday Night Football, per @peter_king. Amazon had interest in Troy Aikman but he went to MNF. They land on Herbstreit, who will likely continue his ESPN/ABC duties as well.

The NFL world is pretty excited with Amazon’s choice.
Great choice by Amazon, and glad that Herbstreit will be able to continue with CFB work with ESPN. https://t.co/uvJt4N2vB7

Herbstreit is so good he doesn’t even care about the NFL and they still wanted him. https://t.co/gkN4YDBiKq

Sounds like a damn good deal for Kirk https://t.co/FufDutKFOL

Home run hire. Herbie is the best analyst in football rn. https://t.co/EHcRfFeqU4

Surprised by some of the replies. It makes me wonder if people have seen Herbstreit call NFL games. Because when he and Fowler do so, they are markedly better than most NFL crews. This is a great hire. https://t.co/kfIYgbCRe7

I like this. I think Herbstreit is good https://t.co/JWNP5BsW4t

Wow, Herbstreit’s work load is going to be absolutely insane this season. I would be in the fetal position by week five. https://t.co/XkofuZWJPF

Honestly this is a really good get by Amazon, in my opinion.
I’ve always loved Herby when he fills in on MNF once or twice a year. #NFL https://t.co/Bc36iXivbi

There are rumors that Amazon could go after Al Michaels for play-by-play since his contract is up at NBC.
Michaels has also said that he has no interest in retiring, despite being in his 70s.
Whatever the case, Thursday Night Football is going to look different in multiple ways next season. Herbstreit will also continue to call games for ESPN/ABC on Saturday night with Chris Fowler.
