Joe Whitt and Kliff Kingsbury speak to the media before practice
The Washington Commanders are back on the practice fields for a second day as they prepare for their away game against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. The team is coming off their bye, and the coaching staff has gone over the first 13 games of the season. Defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. said the defense is close, but they’re still learning. He talked about limiting opponent’s points early in games, but allowing too many points in the 4th quarter. Whitt talked about the defense getting a lot of pressure, but not protecting the corners in the process. He also talked about the effect of Marshon Lattimore being added to the defense.

Assessing the defense over the bye week:
Joe Whitt Jr. addressing the media. Said he learned over the bye week that the defense is close, but they’re still learning and growing. Pointed out the unit is good at preventing points in the first quarter but struggle in the fourth quarter

Marshon Lattimore:
Whitt said he’s hopeful that Lattimore is ready to go this weekend. Still taking him through the steps.

Pressure:
Joe Whitt Jr. said the addition of Lattimore might not impact the pressure packages; said they haven’t shied from using these packages already: “We haven’t protected the corners,” Whitt said.

Joe Whitt says Washington pressures a lot – ‘It would be hard for me to pressure more. We don’t protect our corners.’

Dorrance Armstrong:
DC Joe Whitt Jr. said he’s not worried about DE Dorance Armstrong’s lack of sacks.
Armstrong has 3 sacks this season but none since Week 4.
JW: “He’s been the most consistent player we’ve had up front.”
— Sam Fortier (@Sam4TR) December 12, 2024
An example of where sacks aren’t always a barometer of a lineman’s performance.
Dorance Armstrong has 3.0 sacks this season but zero since Week 5 when he suffered a rib injury.
Regardless, DC Joe Whitt Jr calls Armstrong “The most consistent player we’ve had up front.”

Bobby Wagner:
Whitt said Wagner is a tackling machine and in rare company. Wagner has 100 tackles in 13 straight seasons

Alvin Kamara:
Asked about uncertainty at Saints QB, Commanders defensive coordinator says, “they still have 41 right?” Pretty obvious that New Orleans offense goes thru Alvin Kamara
— JP Finlay (@JPFinlayNBCS) December 12, 2024
Whitt on Saints RB Alvin Kamara: “He is the guy. The ball goes through him. We have to make sure we have him taken care of.”
— John Keim (@john_keim) December 12, 2024
Whitt said Alvin Kamara is “the guy” on the Saints’ offense. Pointed out how NO runs the ball really well and has a good screen game

Kliff Kingsbury’s offense lost two players over the last few weeks that have been very productive for the team. He said it will be hard to replace that production, but this will be a good opportunity for other players to step up. Kingsbury said they’ve been good at adapting the offense, and will need to do it more for the final stretch of the season.
The Commanders claimed WR K.J. Osborn off waivers from the New England Patriots yesterday. Kliff Kingsbury said he liked him coming out of the draft when he was in Arizona: “He can play inside, outside and give you a lot. From what I’ve seen on tape he’s definitely a guy we can use.”

Losing Noah Brown and Austin Ekeler:
Kingsbury on losing Noah Brown and Austin Ekeler: “It’s hard to replace production like that.” But said it’s a good chance for young players to contribute more. Washington has been good at adapting to the talent it has; will have to do that down the stretch.

Kliff Kingsbury at the podium. Called Noah Brown a phenomenal teammate and person. He will be hard to replace but young players will get an opportunity

Bill Belichick:
Asked Kliff Kingsbury, a former college and NFL head coach, about Bill Belichick going to UNC:
“I’ll have to see him on the sidelines to believe that’s happening.”
Added, “I can’t see my man going into any home visits or doing cocktail hours.” pic.twitter.com/BjXp2jHYZI

Kliff Kingsbury on Bill Belichick coaching at UNC: “I will have to see him on the sideline to believe that’s happening. We’ll see how the NFL jobs search goes and all that. I will have to see him on the sideline coaching in Chapel Hill to believe that’s happening.”
— Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) December 12, 2024
More from Kingsbury, on envisioning Belichick coaching in the NIL era: “I got to just sit around and observe last year and, no. I don’t see my man going to any home visits or doing like the cocktail hour after the visits. I just don’t. Maybe he’ll set it up like an NFL deal, but…

Practice Notes
K.J. Osborn:
Commanders new WR KJ Osborn out here fielding punts.
I doubt the team would send him back there instead of Olamide Zaccheaus. Osborn has 11 career PRs and avg’d 4.5 yards per return. pic.twitter.com/phCWlyioKm

First look at new WR KJ Osborn. Among a group fielding punts. Still behind Zaccheaus and Crowder here. Has just 11 career returns and none since 2021; but never know when needed. pic.twitter.com/LwPFdeL0Ib
