The timing of this is definitely surprising, considering that both the football and basketball programs are in their offseasons. Knuth has been with Nevada for the last nine years and still had one more year left on his contract before this news came out.
Per Chris Murray of Nevada Sports Net, the writing had been on the wall for the last three months.
This is accurate. Heard the news about 15 minutes ago. Knuth came to Nevada in April 2013 and was one of the Mountain West’s longest-tenured athletics directors. Writing has been on the wall for the last few months. https://t.co/7MwlTw8wM7

During Knuth’s tenure, the Wolf Pack won eight Mountain West championships, four of which came courtesy of the men’s basketball program.
A search for his replacement will likely begin ASAP.
