In just his first two years as head coach of the Jackson State Tigers, Deion Sanders has already made major strides in achieving his goal of equality for HBCU football programs around the country.
Sanders understands the important role that top-notch facilities play in competing with the already-established big guys of the college football world. So on Wednesday, Coach Prime took to Instagram with a video tour of the Tigers’ upgraded locker room and football facilities.
“‘Us… We did this’. Showing what’s to come here in Jackson. Special thanks to my AD, dear friend and my Patna in taking us to new Heights and giving our kids what they deserve,” Sanders wrote.
While these new facilities still pale in comparison to those boasted by big-name, Power-Five schools, it’s certainly a step in the right direction for Sanders and Jackson State.
Sanders has criticized the school’s lacking facilities in the past.
“The playing field is horrible,” Sanders said back in January 2021, per the Clarion-Ledger. “It’s not a level playing field. It’s unacceptable. Thank God that God called me to change the game, to open their eyes, to open the door. Not just for Jackson State, but for everybody…
“Some of the things that I’ve seen thus far early in my tenure are truly unacceptable. It causes a kid not to dream. It causes a kid to not have that passion because he don’t see no end result that’s promising for him.”
Sanders helped reel in one of the highest-ranking recruiting classes in program history this coming season, including No. 1 overall 2022 recruit Travis Hunter.
With these new facilities, future recruiting efforts should only improve.
