Over the last decade the Boston Marathon has taken on new meaning for people across America and across the world for obvious reasons. But one finisher at the Boston Marathon had just about everyone misty-eyed with how emotional the moment was.
On Monday, 20-year-old Henry Richard crossed the finish line at the Boston Marathon. The emotion on his face was palpable as he threw his arms up in triumph and went to hug his family.
Richard’s younger brother Martin was one of the victims of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. Henry was only 10 when his 8-year-old brother was killed in the domestic terrorist attack.
The photos of Henry Richard crossing the finish line are going viral this afternoon. Over 10,000 people liked the images shared by ESPN in less than an hour.

Martin Richard, Krystle Marie Campbell and Lü Lingzi were killed by two bombs planted by Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013. Over 250 people were injured in the attack, with over a dozen people losing limbs.
The Tsarnaev brothers killed MIT police officer Sean Collier while trying to escape. Tamerlan was killed in a shootout with the police while Dzhokhar was eventually apprehended. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is currently on death row.
The Boston Marathon Bombing remains as ingrained into the consciousness of the city of Boston as 9/11 is in New York City.
To see the family of one of the victims enjoy triumph in a place of a tragedy like that transcends sports.
