Actor Jim Carrey had some harsh words for Will Smith and Hollywood in general during an appearance on “CBS Morning” with Gayle King.
Carrey called it “sickening” that the crowd at Sunday’s Oscars gave Smith a standing ovation for winning Best Actor only a short time after he rushed the stage and slapped comedian Chris Rock for making jokes about his wife.
“I was sickened by the standing ovation. I felt like Hollywood is just spineless en masse,” Carrey told King. “It really felt like this is a really clear indication that we’re not the cool club anymore.”
Carrey said if he were in Rock’s position, he would sue Smith and also wondered if something deeper might have been bothering the 53-year-old actor than just what Rock had to say about Jada Pinkett Smith’s alopecia.

Smith released an official statement on Monday night apologizing for his actions.
“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable,” Smith wrote. “Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.
“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has launched an official probe into the incident and could sanction Smith for his behavior.
